Step by step, he climbs the tower.
With each step up the 150-foot frame, supported only by the metal bars and a healthy grip, SSgt Roberto Rodriguez III makes his way to reenlistment. An electrician by trade who often changes the communication tower’s lights, these dizzying heights are just an afterthought.
On the swaying platform, the wind whips Old Glory behind him as Rodriguez raises his right hand to commit himself and his family to a few more years of service in the Air Force. When the last of his oath echoes in the open air, his family and friends hoot and holler from below him.
The climb down is long and arduous, but it’s all worth it. Besides, it’s not about the destination…it’s about the journey.
